What is Film And
TV Studies
|
Mass Communication
has two major divisions one is Print Media and other is Electronic
Media. Print media deals with visual impression on paper, which is
widely circulated, spreading messages to every corner of the world.
But this is a medium for literate people only, and you really enjoy
when you are educated enough to understand.
Electronic media consists of radio and television. The psychology of
making Production for Film and TV is the same. Basically we play
with four important elements of Cinema, i.e. (i) Visuals (ii)
Dialogues (iii) Music and (iv) Special effects. Together it creates
the impact on viewers. What we get on Television is nothing but
series of lifeless photographs, moving in front of our eyes, and
sound that we recieve from speakers. But ignoring all these
technical aspects we get emotionally involved in the programme. This
medium is very powerful and today the world is addicted to this. We
just can’t survive without Television. Like Roti, Kapada and Makan,
TV also has become the most essential part of our life. Electronic
media is more complicated (Technical) as compared to print media.
The tools used by a reporter of print media are pen, paper, or
maximum a Dicta phone. But in case of a TV reporter, the tools are
Cameras, Recorders, lights, microphones, Video Tapes and so many
other things. One really cannot become true broadcast journalist
unless he is fully familiar with his tools. That is the reason why
this field has become highly technical. Now look at the today’s
Broadcast Journalist (BBC Pattern), he (or she) moves around the
location with his small digital video camera, after careful
observation he prepares the story, he captures most of the sensitive
areas and parts of the events as per the story, prepares the report,
stands himself in front of the camera and reports or replies to the
news room, (Cameras are often hooked up to the newsroom via
microwave link, satellite or mobile phone internet sim card), he
further uses his lap top video editor to edit his story to required
duration, adds the narration, music, and after completing the whole
story sends it back to TV Station via VSAT link. So today’s
broadcast journalist is more like a technical person. He is a
journalist having knowledge of camera, lights, Microphones, editing,
computer and every skill required for TV production. TV Journalist
is just like film director but works on news based productions and
carries great knowledge of politics and current affairs.
The content of these courses is not similar to the syllabus of any
diploma in Mass Communication, but it resembles with the courses
offered by Film and Television Institutes in India and abroad.
